Image of the feature "VI. Loose Sculpture: Ex-situ stone in site museum: length of two conjoined shafts" at Dunfermline Abbey.
by James King.
A length of two conjoined shafts with chevron decoration. Juxtaposition of shafts in this way is reminiscent of the paired shafts to the outer order of the rear-arches of the north-west and south-west nave doorways of Durham Cathedral. A small rebate to one side might point to the possibility that the shafts immediately framed a small window or doorway, though it is perhaps more likely that this was where it was fitted up against an adjoining order.
