We are delighted to announce the launch of the 1066 Club, a new initiative designed to support CRSBI’s efforts to catalogue Romanesque sculpture across Britain and Ireland and make the information freely available and searchable online.

CRSBI is proud to be a British Academy Research Project and extremely grateful for the Academy’s financial support of £5,000 per annum. The costs of the project, however, run to about three times this amount each year, and for the remainder we are entirely dependent on donations.

We have been supported by a number of very generous donors over the years, but as we approach our 40th anniversary we are in need of further funds to continue this fantastic project and to meet our ambitious target of publishing entries for all known sites of Romanesque sculpture in Britain and Ireland by 2035.

To this end, we are launching the 1066 Club in the hope that as many of our friends and supporters as possible will feel able to assist us with a regular donation.

Our Progress and Challenge

After more than 35 years of meticulous work, our dedicated team of volunteer fieldworkers has catalogued over 60% of the 5,500+ known sites of Romanesque sculpture. Each site report undergoes rigorous peer review and professional editing to ensure the highest academic standards. Our costs in doing this fall into four main areas.

Your contribution will help us to:

- Provide reasonable expenses for our volunteer fieldworkers

- Pay modest fees to our professional editors

- Cover our website development, hosting, and security costs

- Fund educational outreach events in order to share our Romanesque heritage as widely as possible.

Member Benefits

While we are committed to the online database being freely available to everyone with an interest in Romanesque sculpture, 1066 Club members will also receive:

  • - A personal acknowledgement of their gift

- The opportunity of public acknowledgement on the CRSBI website

- An exclusive pack of CRSBI postcards featuring stunning Romanesque sculptures

- An annual report exclusive to donors and 1066 Club members

And the knowledge that by joining the 1066 Club, you're not just supporting academic research – you're helping to preserve and celebrate understanding of our shared cultural heritage for generations to come.
