Recording Features: how to record a doorway

-Measure, as required, the height and width of the opening, diameter of the tympanum, thickness of lintel

-Describe the orders from the inner order to the outer order

see example: Orsett, Essex. S nave doorway

S doorway, upper parts

Recording Features: how to record a corbel table

-Treat each face as a detail and number corbels from L to R starting at the L angle.

For tower corbel tables, see e.g. Spratton (Northants), Hinton-in-the–Hedges (Northants).

Tower, E face from SE.

For nave and chancel corbel tables, see St Peter’s, Northampton......which covers wall arcading too.

W tower from SW.

Recording Features: how to record an arcade (nave, chancel, etc)

-You will normally deal with nave arcades, whose piers are numbered from E to W...but remember that we always number arcades in the chancel (i.e. east of the crossing or chancel arch) from W to E. In other words, start numbering at the crossing and work outwards.
