Image of the feature "Blind arcades: Nave blind arcading" at Dunfermline Abbey.

by James King.

Blind arcading was provided along the lower nave walls, except where there were doors. But it has been wholly or partly lost in the S aisle 1st, 7th and 8th bays, and in the N aisle 1st, 5th, 7th and 8th bays

In each bay three arches.

In arches chevron decoration wraps around curved profile.

Arches supported by renewed single shafts at each end of formation and paired intermediate shafts.

Capitals mainly cushions, but above the paired shafts they appear as if scalloped

S aisle 5th bay one capital is full scalloped.

S aisle 3rd bay decorated with a fish-scale pattern (capitals of same type restored in S aisle 4th bay and N aisle 3rd bay).

W wall flanking W door, S side cushion cap, N side volute cap.
