The Corpus of ROMANESQUE SCULPTURE in Britain & Ireland

Derby (now)
Parish church
The only medieval church of Derby but very heavily restored and partly rebuilt. It consists of a 3-bay chancel with a N vestry, an aisled nave with an organ chamber, a W tower and a totally inappropriate brick W extension added in 1972 containing parish rooms. The 14thc chancel was restored in 1851-3 by G.G. Place of Nottingham, the rest of the church in 1859 by G.E. Street. The E wall of the nave is 12thc, including the E respond capitals of both arcades. Curiously the W respond of the S arcade also has a scallop capital. The remainder of the arcades are 14thc in origin, but the N arcade piers were renewed in 1859. The tower has 14thc tracery and was rebuilt in 1898, when the nave extended by one bay. Romanesque features recorded here are the nave arcade responds and a 12thc. grave slab.
Parish church
The former village of Allestree became a suburb of the Borough of Derby in 1968. St Edmund's church was largely rebuilt and extended in 1865-6 by Stevens and Robinson of Derby. It retains a W tower of the 13thc. The only Romanesque feature is a S doorway that is partly renewed.
Parish church, formerly chapel
Littleover is a suburban village of Derby, 3 miles SW of the city centre. The church is in the middle of the village, occupying a surprisingly large churchyard hidden by the surrounding streets. St Peters was originally a village church consisting of a nave with a S porch, a N aisle and a W bell turret, and a chancel. From what survives and a sketch by R R Rawlins we know that it had a 12thc W doorway and font, and windows of c.1300. In 1857 a new N aisle was built, and the roof of the nave was raised, A S aisle was added in 1908, then in 1961 the church was extended westwards by J. S. Comper, almost doubling the floor area. A new W porch was added and a bell turret built in the angle between this and the W wall of the S aisle. The font was moved to its present position alongside the S doorway (which was now halfway along the nave) and the Norman W doorway was moved inside the church to serve as the entrance to the new bell turret. In 1981 a new vestry and a Parish Office were added to the NE corner of the church, and in 2004 a new toilet block wa sadded at the NW. The former W doorway and the font are recorded here.
