Description

Frampton is a village about 7 miles W of Stroud; the older houses of the village face onto a long green. At the far end of the road through the green, and round a corner, is the church. It is now close to the canal but, when originally constructed, was built close to the Severn.

There is no Romanesque fabric pointed out by the guide, but ‘the proportions of the nave before it was extended in the 19th century were typical of those of a 12th-century church’ (Spurr and Hewlett, 1).

The lead font is the only item for this Corpus.

History

Soon after the Conquest, Frampton was held first by Drogo fitz Pons and then by his nephew Walter de Clifford. Walter gave a mill at Frampton to the Benedictine nuns of Godstow (Clark (1905), i. 138 (no. 156)). Walter's deed for the nuns makes reference to his daughter, Rosamund---the fair Rosamund, mistress of King Henry II before her death in 1175--76.

Comments/Opinions

The parish guide (Spurr and Hewlett, 6--7) provides a description of the font and makes the reasonable suggestion that the lead was sourced in the Mendips. The font is one of six using the same moulds. Verey and Brooks (2002) suggest a date of c. 1170, but a mid-12thc date is perhaps implied by such details as the chip-carved band on apostle's robe and the scrolling designs of foliage comparable to the Winchcombe Psalter, c.1130.
