Description

West Coker is a large village situated 3 mi SW of Yeovil. The church St Martin ot Tours, which is located in the centre of the village, has 13thc or 14thc origins but was mainly rebuilt in 1863-64. It consists of a W tower, nave with N and S aisles, and chancel with N chapel and S vestry. The church contains an early font of uncertain date.

In DB West Coker is included with North and East Coker and belonged to the Crown.

Comments/Opinions

While Romanesque fonts do often survive in later medieval Somerset churches, and the slightly crude torus mouldings could be indicative of an early date, it has to be said that there is nothing specifically Romanesque about this sculptural design. The EH listing text describes the font as 'possibly c1250', which would fit with the presence of claw-tooling marks on the surface (usually indicative of a post-1200 date). This could possibly therefore be a late Transitional example.
