Brabourne is a village sited 4.5 miles E of Ashford. The church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin has a wide and heavily-buttressed squat W tower, a nave and a chancel with a later S aisle. There are several items of interest, including both the W and the N doorways, the chancel arch and the tower arch.

History

Domesday Book reports that in 1066 the manor of 'Breburne' was held by Godric of Bishopsbourne; in 1086 it passed to Hugh de Montfort. A church is also mentioned there.

Comments/Opinions

It is particularly interesting and unusual to find evidence of an intended vault.

The W doorway capitals and bases may have been identical. The S base has an almost Early English feel to it, so this could perhaps be a late example.
