Description

Reset arch in wall of commercial building which housed Sykes Video Links, Ltd. in 1996 and housed Bang and Olufsen until 2019. It is currently (2023) undergoing change of use from commercial to residential.

History

The provenance of this arch is attributed to St. Andrew’s Hall, built in the late twelfth century on this site. The arch adorned the front entrance door as seen in a watercolor sketch by Moses Griffith. St. Andrew’s Hall was demolished in 1783 and the fate of the arch at that time is unknown. A pub, “The Lincoln Arms” was then built on the site but it is not known if the arch was incorporated into the building. That building was demolished in 1899 and the present building, with the arch reset in it, was constructed in 1907, housing a pub once again called “The Lincoln Arms.”

Comments/Opinions

Whe seen in 1996 the arch was undergoing restoration by Fred van der Geen. According to his restoration report, no original traces of paint have been found. The arch is painted with a brown grain, oil-based scumble which is being removed down to the stone. 1st and 2nd voussoirs to the right of center which make up the label and second order are modern insertions. The fifth dogtooth from the L springing and the third dogtooth from the R springing are badly damaged as are many of the terminal tips of the trellis mould that cover the angle keel mould.
