Description

Deloraine Court is a medieval house now converted into 3 houses (nos. 4-6 James Street). It is L-shaped and was built c.1300 but remodelled in the 17th and 18thc. The undercroft of the W range is even older, with 3 12thc. piers in nos 4 and 5 James St.

History

The long 12thc. undercroft in this medieval hall was originally divided into two parts. In its current state, the undercroft is partitioned into several rooms and passages and the space is split between the owners of nos. 4 and 5 James Street. The columns support an axial ceiling beam. The house underwent extensive renovations in 1602 and c. 1660.

Comments/Opinions

Given the use of the inverted impost as a plinth, and the additional plinth to raise the height of one column, as well as the segmented nature of the short columns, it is clear that these columns do not stand in their original state, though they are both good 12thc. columns.
