Description

Located in the borderlands between Wales and Shrewsbury, this aisled church is post-Romanesque. The nave, aisles and tower of the church are 19thc; the chancel 13thc and the E window c.1300.

Romanesque sculpture is found on the 12thc font located at the W end of the nave.

History

Pontesbury was a defensive site in the 12thc. The first recorded rector is Reginald in the early 13thc: 1277, David, son of Reginald.
The nave, aisles and tower were constructed by John Turner in 1829.

The three horizontal grooves just below the rim are arguably later. The medieval church is shown in a print in Eyton (1854).
