Description

Tollerton a small village in Nottinghamshire, 4.5mi SE of Nottingham in the East Bingham deanery of the Nottingham archdeaconry. St Peter's is a small church consisting of a chancel, nave with N and S aisles and a tower at the NW corner. The only Romanesque features are a pillar piscina and a disused font.

History

DB mentions a church in the village. The church as it currently stands is the result of a rebuilding campaign which commenced in 1812 and left little evidence of the original medieval structure apart from the nave arcades which are still recognisably 13th century, though they were rebuilt in the early 20th century. At the time of the early 19th century restoration a brick extension was built consisting of a porch, vestries and a mausoleum and a gallery connecting the church with Tollerton Hall (now St Hugh's College). In 1816 the chancel was pulled down and entirely rebuilt.

Comments/Opinions

The date of the pillar piscina is variously given by Cox as c. 1100 whilst Potter takes the view that this is too early. It was apparently discarded in 1812 and spent some time being used as a garden ornament before being returned to the church at the end of the 19thc. The fieldworker suggests it should be dated to sometime in the 12thc.

The late Romanesque font was also removed from the church in 1812 and used as a trough for the parish pump before being brought back into the church c. 1918. It possibly dates from the late 12thc.

The church as it currently stands is somewhat unusual in appearance and the stuccoed exterior walls, the tower and the interior all speak of the early 19th century. Potter remarks "The rebuilding was done in a style which beggars description...".
