Description

The parish church of St Luke consists of a nave, chancel, N aisle, S porch and W tower. The Romanesque elements are the remains of a S aisle arcade, now built into the S wall, and a fragmentary relief in the porch.

History

Upper Broughton featured in the Domesday Survey as being in the lands of the King but no church or priest was mentioned. The S aisle was built around 1200. A N aisle was added in the 13thc. to 14thc., with the tower being of a similar date. The S porch dates from 1733 whilst the chancel is 19thc. The church is much restored.

Comments/Opinions

The dating of the carved slab, which may have been a tympanum, is open to question. Pevsner ascribed it to the Romanesque period, however Cox thought it was probably 16thc., possibly a fragment of a tomb slab.
