Description

All Saints serves the village of Bighton in NE Hampshire, mid-way between Winchester and Alton. Built of rendered flint with red tile roofs, it comprises a low, weatherboarded W tower, an aisled nave with a S porch, and a chancel with a vestry on its N side. The N and S aisles have E chapels which flank the chancel. The N and S arcades date from the late 12thc, as do the font and piscina.

History

The manor of Bighton was granted to Hyde Abbey (New Minster or St Peter), Winchester, in 959. Together with the advowson of the church, the manor remained with Hyde Abbey until the Dissolution.

A church was mentioned in 1086. The presence of simple lancets suggests that the chancel was built in the early 12thc. The nave and aisles date from the late 12thc. The S porch is shown on a plan of 1838 by E. Hunt (Lambeth Library Church Plans Online). The vestry was dated 1836 by Bullen et al. but does not appear on the 1838 plan (Bullen et al. 2010, 181).

The building was restored in 1904-1905 by Ninian Comper.

Comments/Opinions

Although Hamper, in 1809, thought that the arcades and font belonged to the church mentioned in 1086, since the beginning of the 20thc there has been consensus that the N and S nave arcades, font and piscina all date from the late 12thc.

Pevnser & Lloyd dated the ‘typically Hampshire’ arcades to the late 12thc, with the N arcade being slightly later than the S (Pevsner & Lloyd 1967, 101). The VCH and Bullen et al. dated the work c.1180-90 (VCH 1908, 38; Bullen et al. 2010, 180)

The piscina appears to have been reset in the W respond of the S aisle, close to the S porch, as a pedestal for a money box. The capital-shaped bowl is of the same type as the contemporary N arcade pier capital. It is usually dated c.1190 (Hanson 1937, 3; HE list description).
