Although there is an entry for 'Bolun' (Bole) in Domesday there is reference to a "fourth part of a church" and a priest. The village was part of the lands belonging to the archbishopric of York, and in 1066 it was held by Thorfridh of Bole and Wulfmer, and in 1086 was held by Geoffrey, being Roger the Bully the tenant-in-chief.
