Description

Burton (one of several across England) is a small village about 8 miles W of Chippenham. The church of St Mary the Virgin, which is Grade I listed, lies to the S of the village and consists of a W tower, nave, S porch and N porch, S transept, N aisle, NE chapel and chancel.

The N nave arcade has 12thc capitals and there is also a Romanesque font. Further evidence for work of this date is found in the S wall of the nave which retains an unsculptured pilaster buttress and a chamfered plinth. The N wall of the nave may also incorporate re-set Romanesque corbel heads as label stops for two windows.

History

Burton is not mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village was part of the civil parish of Nettleton and was held by Glastonbury Abbey until the Dissolution. The chancel, tower and porch date from the 15thc.

Comments/Opinions

The font is probably 12thc.

The five bay arcade must have 12thc origins but was radically altered, probably in the 14thc when many capitals as well as all the arches were modified or replaced. The abaci with ballflower ornament strongly suggest a date in the early-mid 14thc for this. The capital of Pier 3 may not have begun life as a capital. The N aisle was also probably revamped in the 14thc.

The label stops do not integrate seamlessly with the window; three of them have a discernable gap between the heads and the label, which strengthens the argument from stylistic observation to be suggest that they may have been re-set.
