Description

Donhead is a village in the Tisbury district of Wiltshire, sited 2.5 mi SE of Shaftesbury near the county border. The church of St Mary is Grade I listed. It has a nave with N and S aisles, chancel with side-chapels, W tower and S porch. Both nave arcades date from the late 12th century. The N arcade has moulded capitals, the south arcade carved capitals. The chancel dates from the 13th century. In the late 13th century or in the 14th century the arches of the nave and the clerestory were rebuilt. The church also has a Romanesque font decorated with a series of arches.

History

Donhead is recorded in DB with a population of 60 households in 1086, putting it in the largest 20% of settlements. No church is mentioned however. The lands were owned by Shafterbury Abbey.

The church incrorporates material from the 12th-15th and 19thc when the it was restored.

Stylistically, the S arcade seems to be on the cusp of the EE style so is presumably c. 1200. The font appears to be several generations oder, perhaps c.1100.
