Description

The parish of Otterhampton lies on the Parrett estuary 5 miles NW of Bridgwater, in the Sedgemoor district of Somerset. The church of All Saints (formerly Sts. Peter and Paul), is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It is built of rubble and comprises a W tower, nave, chancel with N vestry, and a S porch. The church is mostly of the 14th-15thc with 19thc modifications. The nave probably has 12thc origins although no original features survive except perhaps the rear arch of the S doorway (plain chamfered - not included here). The font is Romanesque.

History

DB records three holdings called Otterhampton in 1066. The first, held by Edwin, had passed to Roger de Courcelles by 1086. The second, whose owner was unnamed in 1066, had been divided by 1086, two thirds passing to the royal estate of Cannington and the remainder to the previous owner's son Osmer. The third had been held by Estan in 1066 and was held by Herbert of Alfred d'Epaignes in 1086. This estate formed part of the honor of Nether Stowey, at least until 1577. (VCH Somerset vol 6)

Comments/Opinions

It is quite pleasing how the saltire crosses and chamfer repeats the form of the font base on a smaller scale and with decoration: a neat and not very common way to articulate the junction.

As is often the case, the font is the sole remnant of a Romanesque building on the site.
