Description

The hamlet of Alstone lies some 4 miles W of Tewkesbury. In 1844 Alstone was transferred from Worcestershire to Gloucestershire, but remains within the diocese of Worcester. The church, which is situated in the middle of the settlement, consists of a nave, a chancel, a N aisle and a S porch with a modern timber belfry over the E end of the nave. The nave has been rebuilt, as has much of the chancel; the responds of the chancel arch and the S doorway remain in position from the 12thc building. The remains of a 12thc piscina have been incorporated into the S wall of the chancel.

History

Alstone was granted with Teddington in 969 by Bishop Oswald to Oswulf, and both manors were given by Bishop Ealdred to the priory of Worcester. Alstone is not recorded in Domesday Book but was still joined with the manor of Teddington in 1240, being assessed with it at 3 hides, and was sold in 1650 as the manor of Teddington and Alstone (Willis-Bund 1913).

Comments/Opinions

The cracked tympanum, its cut down R impost and relatively sharp chevron moulding suggest that the doorway has been reset, possibly when the S nave wall was rebuilt. The interior of the S nave wall has a number of non-Romanesque sculptural fragments embedded in it, which probably came from another building.

The R nook shaft and capital in the chancel arch seem to be a replacement.

The similarity in decoration on the chancel arch and doorway suggest that they are of the same date; the cabling on the piscina also matches that on some of the necking of the shafts.

The piscina seems to be missing its supporting column; the carving on the face inset into the chancel wall may be later.
