Description

Owmby-by-Spital is a village in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, 11 miles N of Lincoln and 8 miles W of Market Rasen. The church is on the S side of the main road though the village and is a limestone rubble building with ashlar banding. It comprises a W tower, a nave with N aisle and a chancel. Romanesque sculpture is found in the N nave arcade.

History

The largest landowner in Owmby was the Bishop of Lincoln, who held 4 carucates and 3 bovates of land. In addition, Ilbert and Wadard held 5 bovates from Odo Bishop of Bayeux, that were held by Rolf and Siward before the Conquest. In 1066, Koddi held 5 bovates that were held by Peter from Ivo Taillebois in 1086. A holding in Normanby-by-Spital and Owmby-by-Spital was held by Aghmund before the Conquest and by Kolsveinn from Joscelin FitzLambert thereafter. It was assessed for geld at half a carucate, or 4 bovates. It is also noted that Joscelin held 9 bovates of land that belonged to Aghmund in 1066, and Ivo held 1 bovate, and that the Bishop of Lincoln ought to have the soke of these.

Comments/Opinions

The arcade is very crudely constructed. The E respond capital tilts down towards the N and pier 2 is placed dramatically off-centre on its plinth. There are very large mortar beds in the piers and arches, and traces of red pigment on the arcade. The capitals date from c.1200, but the deeply chamfered 2-order arches must be a modifcation of a century later.
