Description

The small village of Lower Lemington lies to the NE of Moreton-in-Marsh. The church of St Leonard is on gently sloping ground and consists of a chancel, nave, S porch, N vestry, and a large bellcote over the chancel arch. The church has two fonts; the Romanesque one is not now used and resides in the chancel along with an anvil. The N and S nave doorways and chancel arch also date from the 12thc.

History

Lower Lemington may have been included in the grant of Stanway and other land to Tewkesbury Abbey by Dodo c.715. The Domesday Survey records an estate of three hides in Lemington, held of the Crown in fee by the church of Tewkesbury. Tewkesbury Abbey retained the manor until the Dissolution, when it passed to the Crown; at that time it was part of Stanway manor, whilst the church of St Leonard was a chapel of Stanway (VCH).
