Description

Broadstairs is a coastal town in Thanet, NE Kent, formed from the inland old village of Thanet and small coastal settlements. The church of St Peter in Thanet is a large aisled building with a chancel, porch and a 15thc W tower of flint and ragstone. The N and S nave arcades are Romanesque.

History

A church is apparently documented from 1128. There appears to be no mention in DB.

Comments/Opinions

The scalloped capital with heads facing into the nave (N arcade, pier 2) is similar in style to those at St Nicholas at Wade nearby.

In the bases of Pier 1 and Pier 2 the first has three zoomorphic terminals and one claw, whereas the second has one zoomorphic terminal and three claws, which suggests that there may be some mis-assembly. Perhaps one of the terminals was accidentally switched between the two, or misassembled in a later restoration.
