Description

The font is the only Romanesque feature. The present church dates fromc.1340 (Pevsner suggestsc.1385), although drastically restored 1868-9.

History

The ancient parish of Coleshill included the villages of Lea Marston, Over Whitacre and Nether Whitacre, whose churches were chapels to Coleshill. DS records a priest, and it would seem that the advowson went with the lordship until at least 1259 when Thomas de Clinton recognized the manor with the advowson of the church, to be the right of John de Clinton, who in 1279 sold his claim to the advowson to Markyate Priory, Bedfordshire. From this time until the Dissolution the priory held the advowson.

Comments/Opinions

The church guidebook states that the font is of Caen stone (Limestone), and that precious stones were originally set into the ring round the Crucifixion scene. A style datec.1140-60 is suggested by the Editor, although Pevsner states that the Crucifixion is of a type hardly possible before 1200.
