Description

North Leverton with Habblesthorpe is a village in the Bassetlaw district of NE Nottinghamshire, 5 miles E of Retford. The church consists of a chancel, nave, S aisle and S porch. Though some Norman masonry remains on the N side, the church is principally of the 14thc (the chancel windows have particularly fine 14thc tracery). The W tower is 15thc. The only Romanesque feature is the S doorway.

History

In the Domesday Survey, North Leverton is recorded as a berewick of Laneham, held by the Archbishop of York, along with 6 other berewicks. A church is recorded for Laneham, but the manor is a large one and the situation in North Leverton is not described in any detail.

Comments/Opinions

Both Pevsner and the List Descriotion offer a c.1200 date for the doorway. It is certainly very late (Transitional, c.1190) and its somewhat unimaginative archivolt is reminiscent of the triforium at Worksop Priory, which was being built at the same time.
