Description

St Mary's was built 1n 1866-8, following the design of the medieval building it replaced. It retains an elaborate Easter Sepulchre of c.1500 installed by the Townshend family of local and national significance. The spiral shafts described here constitute the only Romanesque sculpture at the site.

History

Raynham, East and West, was a large settlement in Brothercross hundred of which the tenants-in-chief in 1066 were King William, Roger Bigod and Reginald fitzIvo.

A similar feature, consisting of three polyonal shafts of comparable dimensions but uncertain date, stands against the S nave wall of All Saints Church, Barmer. At Quidenham, three reset colonettes with volute caitals are set into the N wall of the chancel.
