Description

A spired church in a late 13thc. style by G. E. Street, 1862-63. It contains an arcaded font which is probably medieval rather than 19thc.

History

Brightwalton was held by Earl Harold in 1066, and by the Abbot of Battle in 1086. It was assessed at 10 hides in 1066, but nothing in 1086. The Domesday Survey records a church with a priest, as well as woodland for 20 pigs and 5 closes in Wallingford.

Comments/Opinions

Pevsner (1966) makes no mention of the font while Tyack (2010) merely dates it to the 12thc and notes that the cover is by Street. Arcaded tub fonts are not uncommon in the county (e.e. at Purley-on-Thames, Spital and Tidmarsh) but none is as plain as this one.
