The Corpus of ROMANESQUE SCULPTURE in Britain & Ireland
Devon (now)
Parish church
The church is aisleless and comprises chancel with S vestry, nave with S porch, and W tower. The fabric is red stone and granite. The nave and chancel are 13thc., the S transept is 13thc. or 14thc. (Historic England listing: 1252173). The porch is 19thc. as is the vestry. Romanesque sculpture is found on the font.
Parish church
Originally 12thc. cruciform, with a W tower, the church was extensively rebuilt in the course of the 15thc. – 16thc. and now consists of nave, chancel, W tower, S transept, N aisle with a four-bay arcade, S porch and S vestry. It is built of rubble and coursed rubble. The church was restored in 1843, when the porch was rebuilt, and 1884. (Historic England listing: 1333106) The round arch to the tower is 12thc. Romanesque sculpture is found on the font and the entrance to the S porch.
Parish church
The church has chancel, nave with N and S aisles and three-bay arcades, W tower with vestry to S, and S porch. The W tower is Perp. in its upper stages but could be 13thc. at the lowest stage. There is a blocked, plain pointed arch on the N wall of the tower, which indicates that there may have been a late 12thc. or early 13thc. N transept. Traces of a blocked, plain pointed arch survive on the S tower wall. This connects to the S aisle, suggesting that a S transept existed. S and N arches are out of alignment. The nave is 14thc. The chancel may be earlier 14thc. (Historic England Listing). The aisles are 15thc, as is the porch. The church was restored in 1891-2. Of granite and rubble with granite dressings. The tower is of coursed granite blocks.Romanesque sculpture is found on the late 12thc. font.
Parish church
The church originally comprised a 13thc. nave, chancel and W tower, Modifications were carried out to the nave in the 15thc and 16thc and the S aisle, S porch and vestry (abutting the chancel) were added at this time. The font is the only 12thc. feature and is believed to have come from the church of St Martin, Martinhoe, having been found in the garden of the Rector of Martinhoe (Bulner-Thomas 1995, 3).
Parish church
The church is substantially 13thc. although the tower appears to be 12thc. Romanesque sculpture is found on the re-cut font.
Parish church
The church stands in an isolated position high up on Exmoor. It comprises nave with N aisle and S porch, chancel with N transept and lean-to NE vestry, and W tower. The nave, chancel and S porch are of 1738. The tower was rebuilt in 1828. In 1873 the church was restored and the N aisle, N transept and vestry were added (Pevsner, 210; Historic England list:1289343). Pevsner suggests that was built from materials salvaged from a 12thc. church at nearby Cheriton which had been abandoned in the early 18thc. Romanesque sculpture is found on the font and on a pillar piscina.
Parish church
The church comprises chancel with S chapel, nave with N and S aisles and S porch, and a W tower. The tower is 15thc and the N arcade is 14thc but the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1879 by J. F. Gould (Pevsner 1989, 627; Historic England listing: 1333084). Romanesque sculpture is found on the font and on a pillar piscina.
Parish church
The church has chancel, nave with N and S aisles and arcades of three bays and S porch, and W tower. The tower appears to be early 13thc. as a simple, blocked pointed window in the S wall may suggest. There is also a blocked pointed window in the S wall of the S arcade. There is a blocked doorway with a depressed arch in the N wall of the N aisle and the tower arch is also depressed. The church seems mainly Perp. 12thc. sculpture is found on a reset doorway used as the churchyard entrance, to the S of the church. The fabric of the church is mainly granite, in regular blocks although the N wall has shale interspersed with the granite. The tower is shale with granite quoins.
Parish church
The church has chancel, nave with N and S aisles and a S porch, and W tower. The structure is predominantly Perpendicular. The N aisle was rebuilt in Perpendicular style by G. G. Scott n 1874. The fabric is red sandstone and granite. The font may have originally been 12thc., recut at a later date, and two carved stones reused as bases on the S porch doorway may also be of 12thc. date.
Parish church
The church has a 13thc. chancel, nave and N transept. The chancel was extended and the nave enlarged in the 14thc. The S aisle, W tower and S porch are Perpendicular (1400–50). The church was restored in 1723, and again in 1878, by J. P. St Aubyn, when the vestry was added to the N side of the chancel. (Pevsner, 212; Historic England listing:1104976) The font and a pillar piscina are the only Romanesque features.
