The Corpus of ROMANESQUE SCULPTURE in Britain & Ireland
Dorset (pre-1974 traditional (England and Wales))
Parish church
The 12thc church no longer survives. The present building consists of a 13thc chancel rebuilt and restored in 1865; a 13thc nave, a S porch rebuilt in 1722, a later N aisle and vestry.
The church contains a large Norman font.
Parish church
The church consists of a nave and a chancel. The chancel and nave S wall are 12thc. The N and W walls of the nave were rebuilt in the 15thc.
Romanesque features include the font and some fragments inserted into the S doorway.
Parish church, formerly chapel
Very little remains of the fabric of the 12thc church, which comprised chancel, nave, possibly N and S transepts and a W tower. The tower-arch into the nave has plain responds from late in that century with chamfered imposts now supporting a 13thc pointed arch, and there are fragments from the 12thc chancel arch, already altered in the 14thc, the whole of which has been re-assembled at the E end of the N aisle. The present building consists of a chancel of c.1768 rebuilt in 15thc style in 1864 when an organ-loft was appended to its N side, a nave, a 15thc N transept rebuilt as an aisle, a similar earlier S transept and S porch both created 1852-3 in 15thc style and late 12thc W tower rebuilt and stair-turret attached in the 15thc and again in 1852-3 when the bell chamber and buttresses were added.
Parish church, formerly chapel
Wynford Eagle is a hamlet about seven miles NW from Dorchester. The church was entirely rebuilt in 1840, 500 yards N of the medieval one. The present building consists of a short polygonal chancel, a nave and a W porch. Fragments and furnishings from the earlier church are incorporated into the fabric, such as a very worn fragment of chevron moulding reused in S wall. Romanesque sculpture consists of an early 12thc tympanum reset outside the W wall and a reset capital in the S wall.
Redundant former chapel
The medieval church was completely rebuilt c.1860 but incorporates some re-used 12thc fragments, presumably from that church. It comprises a chancel, nave, N and S transepts and a S tower with spire over a porch.
