Description

North Muskham is a village in Nottinghamshire near the Lincolnshire border, 3mi N of Newark-upon-Trent. The church of St Wilfrid consists of a chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, S porch and W tower. The church appears to have been largely rebuilt in the 15th century with the upper stages of the tower, S aisle and most of the rest of the church being Perpendicular. It was restored 1906-7. Romanesque features include the lower stages of the tower and responds in the N arcade.

Whilst Pevsner states that the N arcade is 12thc, Cox states that it is Perp. with only the two responds giving any evidence of the original 12th century structure. Perhaps the sculpture on the two responds was cut back to make them similar in shape to the capitals.
