Description

The store at Normanton, which uses a former school, takes material from the West Yorkshire administrative area.

The relevant sculpted stones, listed as nos. 1-9, were brought to the store from the castle, and probably include pieces from Pontefract Priory. There are no further details concerning their provenance.

Features

Loose Sculpture

Comments/Opinions

Lockett (1971, 57) says: ‘Two varieties of beakhead voussoirs and some cushion and scallop capitals can be seen in a garden adjoining the [priory] site. The castle grounds and museum contain a piece of meander pattern and a large scallop capital.’ None of these were seen, and enquiries with Pontefract and District Archaeological Society have drawn a blank.

The stone types used at Pontefract Priory are described by Bellamy as Pontefract Rock (limestone), Ackworth Rock, Pontefract Magnesian limestone and Stapleton Magnesian limestone. A local stonemason adds his comments in Bellamy (1965, 101-103).

Bellamy's excavation report says that any sculpture found would be sent to the castle, but in the event it was thought to be more secure in the Museum and the Store. It is probable that much of the material recorded here is from the Priory, but it cannot be confirmed without further evidence from drawings or photographs.
