Description

Several fragments of a Romanesque feature, possibly a doorway, were recovered during work on the ruins of the Church of Ireland church on the island of Inishkeen.

History

The monastery was a 6th or 7thc. foundation and it is recorded that St Mochaimoc was abbot here. A monastery continued here until the 15thc., with the deaths of various erenagh recorded here up to 1426. In 1622 the church was listed as ruinous. The Romanesque fragments were incorporated into the church built after this time.

Comments/Opinions

In general, the style of the carving, particularly that of side 2 of the base, relates quite closely to Devenish and other fragments within the Erne Basin.
