A small church, with nave and chancel, located immediately N of what could be a 10thc. cathedral, c.7.16 m x 3.91 m and 2.67 m x 3.2 m (Westropp, 1900). The altar survives in the chancel. The church has a square W window, and a ruined S doorway.
The chancel was levelled before 1878, and rebuilt in the late 19thc., when the site was excavated to reveal the bases of 'a rich Romanesque chancel arch, dating about 1100, with clustered pillars and chevrons' (Westropp 1900). Westropp's illustration (pl. XI 11) shows the first order of the chancel arch jamb with a bulbous base in three sections, below angle rolls and a central roll separated by wedges; a second order with a detached angle shaft consisting of bulbous sections between shaft rings (a baluster shaft?) and a section of jamb with interlacing strands enclosing foliage palmettes in oval frames; a third order with a plain detached angle shaft and a jamb with an angle roll flanked by multiple wedge mouldings. The illustration also shows two loose stones with different designs of lateral chevron (one with two rolls, the other with three rolls separated by wedges) and a third stone with a lozenge containing a rosette. These remains indicate a richly decorated chancel arch and probably also a doorway. The bases of the chancel arch are now buried in gravel, but horizontal fillets are visible. The arrangement of the second and third orders is not clear, and may have been inaccurately rebuilt. The stones with rolls separated by wedges are similar to those at St Senan. Other more elaborately decorated stones have been removed from the island and stored at the Scattery Island Centre in Kilrush (see Kilrush).
