A manor in Wellington was held by Thorkil White in 1066 and by Hugh l'Asne in 1086, and was assessed at 5 hides. The population listed are 9 villans, 8 bordars, a priest, a reeve, a smith and 4 radknights, as well as 20 slaves; a good-sized settlement with a church. Hugh had another holding in the villlage, assessed at half a hide, which Ralph held from him.
On Hugh's death the manor of Wellington passed to Robert de Chandos and it remained in the Chandos family until the death of Sir Thomas Chandos in 1375.
