Description

Revesby is a village in the East Lindsey district of the county, 11 miles N of Boston and 21 miles SE of Lincoln. It is a dispersed village, extending for approximately a mile along the A155 between Mareham-le-Fen and East Kirby, and has the site of Revesby Abbey, a former Cistercian House, less than a mile to the N of the village. The church is in the centre, on the S side of the A.155. It was built in 1889-91 by C. Hodgson Fowler, and A number of Romanesque architectural fragments bearing sculptural decoration is set into the interior walls of the W tower and vestry.

History

Revesby was sokeland of the manor of Bolingbroke, held by Ivo Taillebois in 1086. It was assessed, together with East Kirkby, at 12 carucates of ploughland, and the two vills had 2 churches between them and a population numbering 68 households.

Comments/Opinions

The Romanesque fragments probably all come from the Cistercian abbey of Revesby, less than a mile to the S of the church and founded in 1142; only earthworks are to be seen at the site today. The pristine condition of the upper capital in the E niche, and its perfect symmetry suggest that it is of modern production.

The scroll on the pier fragment in the W tower is similar to that found on the cross shaft at St Andrew's, Minting, which depicts the Cucifixion; the pier could have come from a cloister.

Pevsner calls the semicircular stone fragment in the N wall of the vestry a 'respond', but it is clear from the cutting on its underside that it could never have served this function.
